Exactly a calendar month ago, Steve Clarke was guiding Kilmarnock to a win against Hibernian.
That was on May 11, but on June 11 he will lead his country into a clash with the world’s No 1-ranked international team, Belgium, with Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne et al.
It marks a big step up in a short space of time for Clarke, who began his Scotland reign after replacing Alex McLeish with a 2-1 victory over Cyprus at Hampden Park on Saturday.
Already assured of a berth in the Euro 2020 play-offs due to their results in the UEFA Nations League, Scotland would rather book their place automatically by climbing above either Belgium or Russia to finish in the top two of the Qualifying Group I table.
