Egypt’s team doctor Mohamed Abou Elela has confirmed that Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah is presenting “mild” symptoms of coronavirus.
Salah returned two positive tests for Covid-19 on Friday, forcing him into a spell of self-isolation. The 28-year-old, who is on international duty, will remain in Egypt for the time being.
Abou Elela told the Associated Press: “He’s a mild case – he doesn’t have severe symptoms. He has to self-isolate in Egypt until his test returns negative and then, of course, he can travel back.
“The concerns from the Egyptian authorities are because Mo for Egypt is special. Everyone here wants to help and to do whatever the whole country can do.”
Speculation has arisen about how Salah contracted the virus; videos circulated on social media of him at his brother’s wedding.
Asked if that was where he picked the disease up, Abou Elela could not give a definitive answer.
“I cannot deny. No one knows because unfortunately, we still don’t know everything about the virus,” he said. “My answer is maybe yes, maybe no.”
