Letitia James Faces Backlash After Playing ‘Victim’ in Mortgage Fraud Case

Now this right here is irony on a Richter scale. New York Attorney General Letitia James — yes, the same one who’s spent years waging lawfare against Donald Trump — has filed a motion asking that the federal mortgage fraud case against her be dismissed, claiming the president has a “personal vendetta.”

If hypocrisy were a felony, James would already be serving a life sentence. The woman who built her career on partisan prosecutions is suddenly clutching her pearls about “bias”? Please. Maybe she should try looking in the mirror — though, like most liberals, self-awareness has never been her strong suit:

New York Attorney General Letitia James (D) on Friday filed a motion to dismiss the federal fraud charges brought against her by the Trump administration, arguing the case was based on President Trump‘s political animus.

“The government targeted AG James for prosecution because of the President’s genuine animus towards her protected campaign speech and fulfillment of her statutory obligations as New York Attorney General,” The motion reads. “This indictment is the product of vindictive and selective prosecution, in violation of the Fifth Amendment.”

The 50-page filing details comments Trump has made about James, including rhetoric her attorneys said amounted to the “flagrantly unconstitutional” prosecution.

A case brought because of personal political animus? Seriously? That’s her defense? This is the same Letitia James who literally ran for attorney general on the slogan “I’m going to get Trump,” and now she’s crying foul because the tables have turned? You can’t script hypocrisy this perfect.

She weaponized her office for years, bragged about it to the cameras, and now wants to play the victim when the heat’s on her. Self-awareness rating: a solid zero — and dropping fast into negative territory.

Here are some of the details from her motion:

The motion details James’ 2022 civil fraud investigation into Trump, who was out of office at the time, and his business empire. A New York judge found Trump liable for fraud and ordered him to pay a $354.8 million penalty comprised of ill-gotten gains from loan savings and property sales, which expanded to over $500 million with interest before an appeals court wiped the fine in August.

“This lawsuit, and AG James’ outspoken criticism of the President, triggered six years of targeted attacks,” James’s lawyers wrote in Friday‘s filing. “President Trump and his allies have used every insulting term in their vocabulary to deride AG James and call for criminal penalties in retaliation for the exercise of her rights and fulfillment of her statutory duties to fulfill her obligations as New York state’s attorney general.”

I’m not aware of “insulting terms” being a legally recognized defense — but lying on a mortgage application? Yeah, that’s definitely actionable. And that’s exactly what AG Letitia James is accused of.

Funny how Democrats suddenly discover due process and fairness when they’re the ones in the hot seat. If any ordinary American misrepresented information on a mortgage application, they’d be staring down serious consequences — and rightfully so.

I’m not a lawyer — and I don’t play one on TV — but even a halfway sane person can see what’s going on here. Cases like this should be decided on the facts and the law, not on whether the defendant hurt someone’s feelings. “Orange Man Say Mean Things” isn’t a valid legal argument, last I checked.

Whether there’s personal animus or not, the merits of the case should stand on their own. Unfortunately, in today’s judicial circus, that’s far from guaranteed. Too often, our courts seem more interested in politics than justice; we’ll see what happens with James’ case.
