st minute Real kick off. United quickly win possession and look to set to attack from the off.
Whatever United’s intentions, the first chance of the match falls to Real. A quick break finds Roberto Carlos, who started the game in midfield, in space on the left wing. His low cross is hit early, curls beyond the entire United defence, but misses the Madrid forwards too.

A direct run from Ryan Giggs is brought to an end by Ivan Helguera at the expense of a corner. The resulting kick from David Beckham comes to nothing.
Again United break down the left, the ball moving from Andy Cole to Ryan Giggs whose cross is cleared unconditionally by Aitor Karanka.
Swift interplay between Raul and Fernando Morientes forces Gary Neville into a sliding tackle in the box. Fortunately for the United man, it is a clean one.

The ball is stuck in the midfield third and shows no sign on leaving. Both sides seem unable to unpick the opposing defence just yet.
Gary Neville misses a header from an Ivan Campo long ball. The ball falls to Roberto Carlos who rockets off toward the United area. His pass finds Morientes, but the striker get the ball caught under his feet and his tame shot falls straight into Raimond van der Gouw’s arms.
Another run from Ryan Giggs, this time with a cross attached. He cuts the ball back from just in front of the touchline, but Dwight Yorke gets his angles wrong and his header flashes wide.
