AC Milan’s hopes of gaining ground in the race for the European positions suffered a big blow last weekend after a humiliating 3-0 loss at Verona. Gennaro Gattuso’s side are now desperate for a win against a tactically superior Atalanta side in Serie A (SA).
Milan are eighth after 17 games (24pts, W7, D3, L7) and a whopping 14 points adrift of AS Roma in fourth place. After an expensive splurge in the summer, Milan’s designs of a Champions League spot currently look a distant dream.

Although they have lost only once in their last four SA games (W1, D2), Milan have just one win in their last five home games (20%). Their overall home record is very impressive though, with just two losses in eight games (W4, D2, L2). Compare that with Atalanta’s away record which saw them notch only one win in eight SA games (W1, D3, L4), that too against relegation-threatened Genoa!
Atalanta have conceded in all their eight away SA games (14 goals, avg. of 1.75 per game) while failing to score in just one (eight goals, avg. of 1.0 per game). In fact, the visitors have scored more than one goal only once on eight SA trips (12%).
However, Atalanta have improved their consistency and have lost only once in their last six SA games (W2, D3, L1). The nine points picked up during this process is 50% of the total points that Atalanta have garnered this entire SA season! After struggling initially with the dual commitments of Europe and SA, Atalanta look to have finally found the right recipe for success.
Milan have lost each of the seven games in which they have been trailing this year. Atalanta have already dropped a league-high 13 points from leading situations in SA this campaign. Will it be Atalanta’s generosity vs Milan’s inability to mount a comeback?
The hosts do not boast a positive record against Atalanta – and have won only once in their last seven encounters (W1, D3, L3). Four of the last six encounters between these sides (67%) ended up with under 2.5 goals.
