The 37-year-old suffered an acute myocardial heart attack during a training session earlier this month and was later discharged from hospital following a series of positive tests.
But according to Portugese outlet O Jogo via The Daily Mail, the former Real Madrid goalkeeper intends to call time on his career at the end of the season because he does not want to feed uncertainty about his future.
When he was released from hospital, Casillas gave a statement which hinted about potentially retiring from the game:
“I want to give thanks for the thousands of samples of affection. We will have to wait a couple of weeks or a couple of months.
“I do not know what the future will be, but the most important thing was to be here and be able to talk quietly. Thanks for the wait, see you soon. I can tell it and you can see it.”
Spanish publication Marca did claim that sources in Porto suggested the Spanish legend might ‘not return to action and that his playing days are finished.’
Casillas signed a contract extension with his current club back in March, which would keep him at the Estádio do Dragão until 2020, but it appears that he will never play again.
The Spaniard will go down as one of the all-time great goalkeepers.
Since making his debut in 1999, Casillas won five La Liga titles, three Champions Leagues, two Copa Del Reys, a World Cup and two Euros.
He played in some memorable fixtures against some of finest players ever to play the game of football.
