A fragile pause in one of the world’s most dangerous conflicts is being tested after a dramatic escalation raised new questions about whether diplomacy can still prevent a broader military confrontation.The latest developments come as President Donald Trump continues pursuing negotiations with Iran while warning that the opportunity for a peaceful resolution is quickly closing.Iran launched multiple ballistic missiles Tuesday toward a U.S. military base in Jordan in what U.S. Central Command described as an “attempted surprise attack.”
According to CENTCOM, every missile was successfully intercepted, and there were no reports of casualties or damage at the base.
The attack marks Iran’s first ballistic missile strike against a U.S. military installation in the region since President Trump paused offensive operations against Iran last week to give diplomacy another opportunity.
CENTCOM said forces belonging to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or IRGC, launched the missiles at approximately 5:45 p.m. Eastern Time.
“U.S. forces remain vigilant and at a high state of readiness,” CENTCOM said in a statement following the attack.
The missile strike comes at a critical moment in the administration’s diplomatic efforts.
On Monday, Trump told Axios the United States remains engaged in “very deep talks” with Iran but made clear that negotiations will not continue indefinitely.
“Not much time,” Trump said when asked how long he was willing to allow diplomacy to continue.
“Either it goes fast or not at all.”
The missile attack now threatens to complicate those negotiations and could force the administration to reconsider its military posture in the region.
Hours after the attack, CENTCOM announced that U.S. and Saudi military aircraft carried out strikes against multiple logistics and weapons sites in eastern Iraq.
According to CENTCOM, those targets were linked to Iran-backed forces responsible for more than 30 drone attacks against U.S. personnel and facilities during the previous 72 hours.
Saudi Arabia’s Defense Ministry later confirmed it participated in the operation, saying the strikes were coordinated with U.S. Central Command.
CENTCOM said all of the recent drone attacks against American forces had been unsuccessful.
Military officials also warned that attacks by Iranian-backed groups have remained persistent.
According to CENTCOM, there were more than 600 attempted attacks against U.S. citizens and facilities in Iraq between February and April by militias aligned with Iran.
“The IRGC and its terrorist proxies must cease these attacks to avoid further U.S. military response,” CENTCOM said.
The latest missile attack follows another deadly assault earlier this month.
Iran previously targeted a U.S. air base in Jordan with a combined missile and drone attack that killed two American service members.
That attack prompted President Trump to authorize what became a 13-night military campaign targeting Iranian-linked sites.
Tuesday’s strike also occurred just hours after Trump hosted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House.
According to the White House, Iran was one of the primary topics discussed during the meeting, which officials described as “positive and productive.”
While the successful interception of Tuesday’s missiles prevented immediate casualties, the incident underscores the continued volatility in the Middle East and the risks facing U.S. forces stationed throughout the region.
Whether Iran’s latest action represents an isolated escalation or the beginning of a broader confrontation remains unclear, Axios reported.
For now, the Trump administration continues pursuing diplomacy while warning that further attacks by Iran or its proxies could trigger renewed American military action if negotiations fail to produce results.
