Chalk it up as another “win” for socialism, and by ‘win,’ I mean New York City is now one step closer to the economic collapse that the commie running the city is engineering.
The average rent in Manhattan has hit $6,655 per month — an all-time record high. That’s a 10% jump from a year ago. The median sits at $5,295, up 6% from last July. And real estate professionals are pointing straight at Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s rent freeze on stabilized units and the looming pied-à-terre tax as primary culprits driving market rents to historic levels.
This was the most predictable outcome in the world. The only people surprised by it are the people who never bothered to read the century of economic evidence on rent control — or who read it and decided ideology mattered more than outcomes.
Here’s the mechanism, explained in plain English: when you cap rents on stabilized apartments below market rates, landlords have no incentive to put units on the market. Tenants with below-market rents stay put indefinitely — because moving means giving up a subsidized apartment for one at market rates. Supply contracts. Available units become scarcer. Competition for the remaining uncontrolled units intensifies. Market rents — the ones Mamdani can’t freeze because he doesn’t control them spike.
Record-low apartment vacancies across the city are leaving renters with almost nowhere to turn. Mamdani’s rent freeze didn’t help renters. It helped the renters who already had stabilized apartments — at the direct expense of every New Yorker trying to find a place to live in the free market.
Ben Shapiro identified the darker possibility, and it’s one that every conservative should understand about the left’s housing policy playbook: “The goal is to accelerate the discontent, blame free markets, and then centralize even more power.” This is the Obamacare model applied to housing. Create a crisis through intervention. Blame the market for the crisis. Demand more government control to fix the crisis. Repeat until the government runs everything.
Mamdani tried to freeze rents and impose a pied-à-terre tax, and all it did was push Manhattan rents to an all-time high. Meanwhile, the socialist grocery stores are open to anyone on earth without ID verification, the subway is still $3 to ride, universal childcare is projected to cost twice what his campaign advertised, and the NYPD just rejected his wife’s request for a security detail in war zones.
This is what socialist governance looks like after six months. Not the campaign poster. Not the inspirational Instagram content. This. $6,655 median Manhattan rent while Mamdani’s administration is busy threatening property owners, doxxing nearly a million homeowners, and picking fights with federal law enforcement.
The laws of economics are not optional. They do not bend for ideology. They did not bend for Hugo Chavez, or Nicolás Maduro, or any of the other socialist leaders whose policies produced the same results with the same inevitability. They are not bending for Zohran Mamdani. They never were going to. New York City is learning this lesson in real time.
