Vance and Netanyahu Hold Direct Talks in Washington as Trump Increases Pressure on Iran

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Vice President JD Vance held a direct and candid one-on-one meeting at Blair House on Tuesday.Vance and Netanyahu addressed lingering differences over the handling of the Iran conflict, senior officials from both sides confirmed. The private discussion, described as frank and productive, focused on Vance’s recent public critiques of aspects of Israel’s approach and concerns about the Jewish state’s standing within Republican circles.

A senior Israeli official said Netanyahu raised the vice president’s comments head-on, stressing the need for unity between the closest of allies against the Iranian threat.

A U.S. official characterized the exchange as “direct,” while another described it as cordial, with both leaders agreeing to continue cooperating on shared Middle East priorities. Netanyahu later indicated the conversation had straightened out the issues.

The meeting comes as President Donald Trump continues to demonstrate decisive American leadership in the five-month conflict that began with joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on February 28.

Trump has repeatedly emphasized that Iran will never obtain a nuclear weapon under his watch, declaring the military campaign a tremendous success that has devastated Iran’s navy, air force, missile capabilities, and leadership ranks.

“We’ve hit them very hard,” Trump has said, noting the regime’s leaders are “scum” and “sick people” who cannot be bribed—only beaten.

In recent days, Trump ordered a heavy wave of strikes after Iran launched ballistic missiles toward U.S. forces in Jordan and elsewhere, all of which were intercepted.

“It’s our turn to hit them,” the president stated from the Oval Office. “We’re going to hit them very hard… They’re going to get a beating.”

In an interview with Fox News, he vowed to “beat the fing s out of them.”

U.S. Central Command confirmed strikes on dozens of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targets, including command centers, missile and drone facilities, and maritime sites.

Trump has balanced firmness with openness to diplomacy when it serves American interests.

After briefly pausing a two-week air campaign, he reported “good talks” with Tehran and a chance for a deal, while warning that failure would mean a return to intense military action.

“You can’t bribe them. You’ve got to beat them, and we’ll beat the hell out of them,” he told a Michigan rally.

Earlier, he signed a June Memorandum of Understanding aimed at ending hostilities and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, though violations by Iran led him to declare the interim accord over and resume operations.

Vance has played a key role in advancing America’s priorities throughout the conflict.

As a consistent voice for avoiding open-ended foreign wars while protecting core U.S. security interests, the vice president has defended diplomatic efforts that prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons without indefinite American entanglement.

He has publicly reminded Israeli officials that the United States remains Israel’s indispensable ally and that Washington must prioritize the American people when interests diverge.

“Where that diverges, we, unfortunately for the Israelis, have to choose the side of the American people,” Vance has said, while still calling Netanyahu a “good partner.”

Netanyahu has privately opposed elements of the U.S. approach at times, preferring continued military pressure to achieve broader goals including lasting degradation of Iran’s proxy network and ballistic missile program.

Yet the Israeli leader has avoided open confrontation with the Trump administration, recognizing the unmatched support Israel has received.

Trump and Netanyahu met at the White House this week—their first in-person talks since the war’s launch—and explored every option: negotiated deal, sustained economic pressure and blockade, or further massive strikes.

An Israeli official stressed that final decisions rest with the American president.

Netanyahu called the conversation “excellent” and marked by “full partnership” and mutual support for ensuring Iran never goes nuclear.
