For two generations, America’s governing consensus told its young people the same thing: get a four-year degree, take on the debt, and don’t look back at the factory floor your parents worked. The bill for that advice is now visible in a single number. There are, by the administration’s count, 580,000 manufacturing jobs open in this country right now — and the main thing standing between American workers and those paychecks isn’t offshoring or automation. It’s that nobody taught them the skill.
That’s the gap the Trump administration says its new “Foundry School” is built to close. Launched Wednesday in partnership with eight colleges around the country, the program is aimed squarely at skilled trades and advanced manufacturing, and it sits inside a broader State Department push called “Pax Silica” oriented toward winning the AI and semiconductor economy. The framing from officials was blunt: for decades the ruling class shipped American factories abroad, and the effort now is to rebuild what they called the arsenal of American industry.
Strip away the branding and the case is strong, because the numbers are real regardless of who’s making them. The administration cites a need for more than 3.8 million skilled workers before 2033, concentrated in defense and semiconductors — the two industries a serious country cannot afford to import. You can reshore a factory with tariffs and tax incentives, but a chip fab or a munitions line is useless without technicians who can run it. Capital moves faster than competence. Right now the competence is the bottleneck.
The deeper shift here is cultural, and it’s the part worth taking seriously. Vice President Vance framed the launch around a question a growing number of young Americans are already asking on their own: is the college degree still worth it? For a lot of them, staring at tuition bills and a diploma that doesn’t clear the jobs they were promised, the honest answer is no. A program that tells an 18-year-old there’s a respectable, well-paid future in building things — without four years of debt first — is meeting that skepticism with an actual alternative rather than a lecture.
To be fair, this is a launch, not a result. Eight colleges and a State Department press release do not yet equal 3.8 million trained workers, and government workforce initiatives have a long history of splashy rollouts and thin outcomes. The right measure isn’t the ceremony this week; it’s whether anyone can point to real graduates in real jobs two years from now. Promises are cheap. Pipelines are hard.
But the diagnosis underneath the program is correct and Team Trump is certainly getting the ball rolling, which is more than we can say for any president in the age of “globalism.” A nation that forgot how to make things, and then told its children that making things was beneath them, ended up with more than half a million open jobs and no one to fill them. Fixing that starts with saying plainly that the work has dignity and a future, and Team Trump has certainly done that.
