The Democratic Party spent two primary cycles rigging the system against Bernie Sanders. They rewrote debate rules, mobilized the establishment, and strong-armed candidates out of the race to stop him. And now, in the wreckage of everything that followed — the Biden disaster, the Harris humiliation, the Platner catastrophe — the party that spent a decade trying to kill socialism is watching a socialist become its most viable presidential candidate.
Mark Halperin said it plainly on his podcast this week: the toughest thing to do right now in Democratic politics is stop a socialist from becoming the presidential nominee. He’s right. And he ranked an 84-year-old Bernie Sanders third on his current 2028 list — above AOC, above Kamala Harris, and moving toward number one if current trends hold.
Let that sink in for a moment. The 2028 Democratic frontrunner conversation now includes a man born during the Roosevelt administration who honeymooned in the Soviet Union and has spent sixty years calling for a political revolution against American capitalism. And Halperin’s assessment is that Sanders’ biggest liability — his age — is substantially offset by the fact that he looks and acts like someone with the mental and physical strength to run.
Unlike the last guy Democrats nominated who looked fine on paper.
The Halperin analysis is worth taking seriously because it follows the actual logic of where the Democratic Party’s energy lives right now. DSA candidates just won primaries in New York and Colorado. The progressive caucus chairs published a resolution promising to kill the filibuster, pack the Supreme Court, and federalize elections the moment they take back power. Gavin Newsom — nominally the frontrunner — is under active DOJ investigation and can’t bring himself to clearly oppose socialism when the cameras are rolling. Josh Shapiro, the supposed moderate alternative, has “failed to put a stake in the sand against socialism” according to Halperin’s own reporting.
Into that vacuum walks Bernie. Name recognition through the roof. Grassroots fundraising machine already built. Strong in Iowa and New Hampshire. A consistent message he has been delivering for sixty years without deviation. And a base that genuinely believes he was stolen from them twice — which, to be fair to them, isn’t entirely wrong.
There’s one more element Halperin raised that deserves to be stated directly: the anti-Israel radicalism now coursing through the Democratic base is so intense that Jewish candidates face serious structural disadvantages for the nomination. Sanders survives this test because his anti-Israel positions are sufficiently extreme to satisfy the pro-Hamas wing of the party — at least for now. How long that lasts once he’s the actual frontrunner is an open question.
Here is the bottom line that every conservative needs to understand heading into 2028: the Democrats are not moderating. They are not course-correcting. They are not learning lessons. They are radicalizing — fast, deliberately, and with genuine grassroots energy behind them.
A party with Bernie Sanders as its frontrunner is a party that has fully embraced what it is. Republicans had better be paying attention — because that base turns out in midterms, and they’re angry.
Halperin added:
But what Bernie Sanders is, and the reason why, if things stay on this trajectory, I’ll probably move him to number one, is he’s against the establishment. He’s against the status quo. He’s against business as usual. And he’s for specific things to address income inequality and healthcare insecurity.
And that is who the Democrats will nominate in 2028. Someone who has a vision for those things.
