The FBI has ordered a significant reallocation of resources to support a priority investigation related to the 2020 election in Fulton County, Georgia.
According to an unclassified internal memorandum issued Wednesday and first reported by MS NOW, the FBI’s Directorate of Intelligence and Criminal Division instructed all field offices to immediately provide additional personnel and resources to assist the bureau’s priority investigation being led by the Atlanta Field Office.
The memorandum directs FBI field offices to contribute personnel based on the size of each office, resulting in the assignment of approximately 260 intelligence officials to the investigation.
The document does not specify how many FBI special agents are participating, although reports indicate that dozens have also been assigned to the case.
Under the plan, each intelligence analyst is expected to complete 708 records checks by July 17. The memo also authorizes overtime, including work on weekends and holidays, to meet the investigation’s deadlines.
“In support of the Director’s Office priority effort, the Directorate of Intelligence (DI) and Criminal Division are requesting all FBI field offices to immediately surge support to an FBI Atlanta priority investigation,” the memo stated, per MS NOW.
FBI Director Kash Patel ordered personnel from all field offices to take part in the effort.
One official familiar with the matter described the focus of the analysts’ work as, “looking for derogatory information is the short answer.”
“The idea is to build a case. Look at associations between people, look into their social media, their business activity, travel, contact with other investigative subjects,” the official added, per MS NOW.
The latest personnel surge follows earlier investigative steps in the same inquiry.
In January 2026, FBI agents executed a search warrant at a Fulton County election storage facility, seizing more than 600 boxes of records related to the 2020 election.
According to officials, the materials included paper ballots, ballot images, voter registration records and vote tabulation documents.
The federal investigation began after a referral from Kurt Olsen, who was serving as a presidentially appointed White House official responsible for election integrity matters.
A timeline released by the Justice Department pursuant to a court order indicates that Olsen submitted the referral in early January 2026.
The FBI assigned a special agent based in its Atlanta Field Office to review the referral the following day. Six days later, on Jan. 14, the bureau formally opened a full investigation.
An investigative summary prepared shortly afterward served as the basis for the search warrant affidavit executed on Jan. 28, 2026.
During that operation, the FBI said agents were “executing a court-authorized law enforcement action” at the Fulton County Election Hub and Operation Center in Union City, Georgia.
Justice Department officials have maintained that the investigation is being conducted through the department’s established legal processes and is not based on political direction or the personal preferences of the president.
The investigation centers on election records and procedures from the 2020 presidential election in Fulton County, where Biden apparently defeated Trump by 11,779 votes.
The assignment of hundreds of intelligence analysts marks a significant expansion of the FBI’s effort, substantially increasing the resources devoted to reviewing records and other information related to the ongoing federal investigation.
The FBI raid on the Georgia election facility was the culmination of a standoff over access to 2020 records that stretched back more than a year, according to an analysis of events leading up to the search.
The year-plus dispute began as a disagreement between the Georgia State Election Board and Fulton County election officials over the availability and completeness of voting records from the 2020 presidential election, including absentee ballot documents and related data.
The state board issued subpoenas in 2024 and 2025 seeking ballot images, signature envelopes, and other records tied to alleged anomalies in vote tabulation and storage.
